UNDER THE TREES BOISE
Have you heard the heavy bass beats, the crowds lining up at the doors, and the happy, smiling faces all summer? Boise is moving to a new rhythm, and it’s called Under The Trees. This underground rave movement is more than just a party-it’s a revolution that’s carving out a bold new space in Boise’s creative scene. Under The Trees captures the freedom and unity of electronic music culture, where people from all walks of life connect through the hypnotic pulse of EDM while embracing Boise’s stunning natural landscapes.
The journey began in early spring 2024, with a breathtaking sunset event in the Boise Foothills, setting the tone for an unforgettable season. As the months progressed,
Under The Trees held events across Boise’s favorite local parks, including the beloved Julia Davis Park, bringing vibrant energy to some of the city’s most cherished outdoor spaces. Founded by Dr. Thomas Posen-a College of Idaho music professor with a background in classical music honed in the Austrian Alps—the movement merges two worlds: the raw energy of EDM with the timeless beauty of classical music.
Dr. Posen’s vision is to connect the younger generation with a diverse music experience that goes beyond heavy beats to embrace the intricate journeys of classical melodies, creating an entirely new experience for those seeking more from the music scene.

The historical rave at the Old Idaho Penitentiary solidified Under The Trees’ place in Boise’s history. This iconic, storied venue transformed into a thriving EDM wonderland, with lights flashing against the ancient stone walls and music reverberating through the night, creating an immersive experience
that redefined Boise’s underground culture. Euphoria Magazine was honored to make its public debut at this groundbreaking event, hosting a pop-up fashion show in the heart of the rave. Models walked through the fog and under pulsating lights, showcasing fashion that was as bold and unapologetic as the music itself. This collaboration was a historic moment, fusing high-energy electronic beats with expressive fashion in a way that perfectly represented Boise’s creative spirit.
Dr. Posen’s mission for Under The Trees goes beyond music, emphasizing land stewardship, community engagement, and appreciation for
Boise’s parks and natural scenery. His team of dedicated volunteers brings diverse expertise to the movement, ensuring every event supports emerging DJs and fosters respect
for Boise’s environment. Together, they’re cultivating a culture that celebrates the music, the city’s beauty, and the vibrant community that makes Boise so unique.
Under The Trees is the embodiment of rave culture at its finest—a place of unity, self- expression, and positivity. In a time when music festivals can feel more corporate than cultural, Under The Trees offers a refreshing reminder of EDM’s true roots: celebrating freedom, creativity, and the people who make Boise’s nightlife unforgettable. The night at the Old Idaho Penitentiary was a defining moment for Boise—a celebration of the city’s potential, pushing boundaries in both sound and style, and establishing Under The Trees as an unstoppable force.
MEET DR. TOM
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your background, and how you got started in the music industry?
My foray into the electronic music industry is unusual. My journey began in second grade with piano lessons where I advanced quickly, but as the only musician in my family, it wasn’t clear how music might play a role in my future. When I began university studies,
I started as a Physics and Astrophysics
major, but not long thereafter, music crept back into my life in a big way. After a year pursuing my physics degree, I started working simultaneously towards another degree in piano performance. 260 credits later, I earned
two separate undergraduate degrees, a B.A. Physics and Astrophysics, summa cum laude and a B.M. in Music Performance. At this time, I had no idea how these degrees could weave into each other.
After my two separate undergraduate degrees, I continued my academic studies with a dual concentration master’s of music in piano performance and music theory at the University of New Mexico. Thereafter, I finished a doctoral degree in music theory at McGill University in Montréal, QC Canada. Throughout these studies, I performed classical concerts as a pianist both nationally and abroad, presented and published scholarly papers on 16th century music and Beethoven, and began to produce electronic music in my apartment’s living room. Suddenly, I found something that married my interests in physics and music: electronic dance music. This style of music has allowed me to combine my deep understanding
of musical structures including harmony, melody, counterpoint, and form, with my knowledge of the physics of sound including elements such as sound synthesis, sampling, and audio processing.
Fast forward to 2023: I moved to Boise to work as a Visiting Professor of Music at the College of Idaho where I now teach the music theory curriculum and music technology. This job
has been a great fit: I’ve had the opportunity to teach the classical music curriculum while at the same time creating new courses such as “Electronic Dance Music” and “Music, Multimedia, and Marketing.” I want my students to have a rounded education that marries the rich history of classical music with modern, cutting age music. I love teaching students how Beethoven composed alongside analyzing and producing new electronic dance music, DJing, and more.
What inspired you to start Under the Trees?
My inspiration for Under the Trees was born in Montreal, Canada, a city known for
its dynamic and thriving nightlife, underground electronic music, and festival culture. When I arrived in Boise, I missed what I had in Montréal—a recurring electronic music festival experience that took place in beautiful
and stunning locations throughout the city. I also wanted an experience that would be family friendly and accessible to more people. In short, I craved a sophisticated atmosphere built around electronic music that felt safe, fun, and welcoming to all.
For Euphoria Magazine, joining forces with Under The Trees was an honor and a celebration of Boise’s incredible underground culture. This is only the beginning, and we’re ready to capture and celebrate the heart of this movement, one beat at a time. With each event, Under The Trees continues to redefine what it means to connect with music, nature, and each other, setting the stage for a cultural renaissance that Boise has eagerly awaited.
